Seinfeld's Porsches Head to Amelia Island

The air-cooled Porsche world has been revived in the past few years. Prices of most rare, air-cooled Porsche models have been drastically rising, with cars like the 1974 Porsche 911 Turbo and 356A Carrera Speedsters, who boast ultra-rare, high-output Type 547/1 "four-cam" engines, appreciating faster than almost any other collectible vehicle.

One famous Porsche collector who will be celebrating these rare engineering marvels this spring at the 2016 Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance is the “Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee” creator and host Jerry Seinfeld.

In the Porsche world, Seinfeld ranks among the top Porsche collectors globally, with about 50 Porsches in his collection including the very first 911.  In announcement on January 19, 2016, Gooding & Company, a classic car auction company, has announced that they will have a selection of consignments from The Jerry Seinfeld Collection to be sold at the Amelia Island Auction on March 11, 2016. The complete list of about five vehicles is being kept a secret, but three Porsches have been released. They include a blue 1955 Porsche 550 Spyder, a green 1958 Porsche 356 A 1500 GS/GT Carrera Speedster and a yellow 1974 Porsche 911 Carrera 3.0 IROC RSR.

The vehicle that is causing the most excitement is the 550 Spyder, which still has its original paint and interior trim. This particular model is similar to the vehicle James Dean was driving when he fatally crashed in 1955 and experts estimate it could fetch up to $6 million.  While not as high as the Spyder, the one of 13, Auratium green 356 is expected to sell for as much as $2 million, while the 911 has a top-range estimate of $1.5 million.

“I’ve never bought a car as an investment,” Seinfeld said of his collection. “I don’t really even think of myself as a collector. I just love cars. And I still love these cars. But it’s time to send some of them back into the world, for someone else to enjoy, as I have.”

We are looking forward to see how car collectors react to what Seinfeld will unveil this March on Amelia Island.
